Northumberland is the most northerly of England's counties. It has often been referred to as, "England's last wilderness". A place of great natural beauty whose varied landscapes truly offer something for every body.
Bilton Barns is situated in a very special area, all of our cottages & accommodation are located within pleasant villages or set in stunning countryside, and all are within sight of the beautiful Northumberland coast.
Alnmouth is a quaint seaside village which can be seen from Bilton Barns. So named because the River Aln enters the sea at Alnmouth, the estuary at low tide attracts many species of wading birds due to the abundance of food in the mudflats - a must of any birdwatcher! The village has a surprisingly amount of the restaurants, cafes and public houses, an evening stroll down the main street will have your mouth watering!
Northumberland literally has attractions and activities for everyone! For the history buff, Northumberland offers a myriad of castles, amongst the most famous, Alnwick Castle. Recently used as the location of the box office smash Harry Potter movies. The earliest parts of the castle date back to 1096 where Yves de Vescy became baron of Alnwick and erected fortifications on the banks of the River Aln. The castle is open to visitors from the 28th March till 25 October 2002. Recently the Alnwick Castle Gardens have been opened to the public.
Other castles all within easy travelling distance from any of the accommodation include, the well preserved Warkworth Castle, spectacular Bamburgh Castle, historic (& haunted!) Chillingham Castle, Lindisfarne castle on Holy Island, and last but by no means least the spectacular ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle perched ontop of a rocky outcrop overlooking the North Sea and the Farne Islands.
The Farne Islands are one of Britain¹s most important seabird sanctuaries, the islands are home to many different bird species, including puffins, shags and four species of tern. By now the birds are used to the tour boats and visitors who enjoy surprisingly close views. There is also the largest colony of Grey Seals which can be seen swimming and diving in the water around you or sunbathing on the rocks. Tour Boats can be boarded from the harbour at Seahouses for around £18 per person and last roughly 2 hours but remember to bring a camera as you'll see some amazing sites!
Seahouses is a bustling fishing village around 20 miles north of Bilton Barns, the harbour isn't as busy as it once used to be, nowdays a lot of the fishing boats have turned into tour boats which ferry visitors around the Farne Islands. The Village has a lot to offer its visitors, an 18 hole golf course, or for the less serious golfer, an 18 hole crazy golf course! There are amusement arcades, gift shops selling every flavour of rock that you could think of, numerous award winning traditional fish 'n' chip shops and a sea life centre which allows close up views of the many creatures which live in the sea just outside - Without even getting your feet wet!.
Further inland from the coast is hill country, The Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park are a very popular attraction for the lover of the outdoors. For the walker, there are many well signed public footpaths dotted all over the hills offering spectacular views and solitude (The Cheviots are known as the, "Land of the Far Horizons"). If walking isn't energetic enough, mountain biking is also very popular through some of the most challenging countryside trails you will ever encounter. However you travel through the area, a picnic is thoroughly recommended next any of the bubbling rivers flowing through the Cheviot Hills.
Its hard to write about such a special place and do it justice, we can only recommend that you book a holiday with Bilton Barns and come and experience the treasures of Northumberland for yourself - We look forward to hearing from you!

We look forward to introducing you to our county!
